Library services, such as catalogs, databases, and online material, are designed to collect as little information about patrons as possible. All services offered by Meadville Lombard that require a Populi login follow this principle. However, free services, such as Google Scholar, do not. Google is fundamentally an advertising company that monetizes its services through acquiring and analyzing user data to sell personalized advertisements. As powerful and useful as Google Scholar is as a resource, patrons should be aware of the privacy trade-off in using it.
